The role

This is a great opportunity for an early-career urban planner to help shape the future of Canterbury Bankstown’s centres and work on large, interesting projects. You'll be part of a team known for delivering award-winning master plans. 
 

Canterbury Bankstown is a large, dynamic council with multiple centres that require master planning. Our team has a strong history of delivering high-quality plans, including the Campsie, Bankstown, Lakemba and Canterbury Master Plans.
 

In this role, you'll help develop master plans from research to final design. You'll analyse site data, market trends, and environmental factors to create a strategic vision that identifies key opportunities and challenges. Next, you'll create spatial plans that define land use and set long-term goals that balance growth with community needs. You'll also work with council teams and external stakeholders including NSW Government agencies. The role also involves managing consultants and keep projects on track and within budget.


Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Apply diverse planning expertise to address challenges.
  • Support Executive Planners in preparing consultant briefs and collaborate with multidisciplinary consultants for master planning and decision-making.
  • Recommend new planning controls for strategic centres and locations, aligned with Council’s strategic planning framework.
  • Enhance Council’s urban planning and development processes and systems.
  • Develop, implement, and review planning policies, land use strategies, and planning instruments.
  • Consult with internal and external stakeholders on key projects.
  • Plan and participate in community engagement activities.
  • Adhere to probity procedures.
  • Implement safe work practices and manage work health and safety risks.

You will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in town planning or related discipline.
  • Proven team experience in delivering outcomes.
  • Knowledge of planning processes, including planning proposals, Local Environmental Plans, and Development Control Plans.
  • Experience in managing planning projects on time and within budget.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Understanding of the roles of State and Local Government and the private sector in planning.
  • Insight into urban renewal, planning frameworks, and community issues.
  • Strong verbal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of planning legislation, state planning policies and planning instruments.


The salary range for this opportunity starts at $90,858 (Grade G, Step 1) + 11.5% super. Salary may be negotiable dependent on skills and experience.
